SERVING GOD FOR WHO HE IS, NOT JUST FOR WHAT HE GIVES (3)

TIMES OF REFRESHING DAILY DEVOTIONAL www.thefountspring.org

DATE: FRIDAY, 7 JUNE 2024

So, when our faith is transactional, our commitment to God becomes conditional. A conditional commitment in faith means that our dedication to God hinges on the fulfillment of our personal desires and expectations. We might remain faithful only as long as we receive what we want, leading to a wavering faith when expectations are unmet, or challenges arise. This type of faith operates on a quid-pro-quo basis: “I will follow and serve God as long as He meets my needs and grants my requests.” Such a mindset transforms our relationship with God into a conditional contract rather than an unconditional covenant of love and trust.

SCRIPTURE: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

REFRESHING FOR THE DAY: One major characteristic of conditional commitment is performance-based relationship. Our relationship with God becomes centered on His performance in meeting our demands. We measure His love and faithfulness by the blessings we receive rather than by His unchanging nature. The other is fluctuating faith. Our faith becomes unstable and dependent on circumstances. When everything goes well, we feel close to God. However, during difficult times, our faith wavers, and we might feel abandoned or question God’s goodness. Stay Refreshed!

NOTE THIS: Conditional commitment in faith reduces our relationship with God to a series of transactions, leading to instability and fluctuating faith. By recognizing and addressing this mindset, we can cultivate a deeper, more resilient faith that remains steadfast regardless of circumstances.

RESPONSIBILITY: Focus on worshiping God for who He is, not just for what He can do. Regularly practice gratitude, praise, and adoration, which shifts our focus from our needs to God’s greatness and goodness.

PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, I come before You, recognizing that at times my faith has been conditional, based on my desires and expectations. I ask for Your forgiveness for the times I have treated my relationship with You as a contract rather than a covenant of love and trust. Help me to trust in You with all my heart and to lean not on my own understanding. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PROPHETIC WORD: May the Lord strengthen our faith so that it remains steadfast, regardless of our circumstances. May our commitment to Him be unwavering and rooted in genuine love and reverence for who He is. In the name of Jesus, Amen!
